Why Your Savings Rate Matters

Your savings rate — the percentage of your income you save and invest — is the single most important factor in determining how quickly you can reach financial independence. It's far more powerful than investment returns alone.

This is counterintuitive but mathematically true: a higher savings rate does two things at once. It increases how much you invest each year AND it reduces how much you need to retire (because you're living on less). This double effect is why going from a 20% to 50% savings rate can cut your time to FIRE from 37 years to just 17 years.

To increase your savings rate, focus on the biggest expenses: housing, transportation, and food. Cutting a $500/month car payment and investing it instead adds over $500,000 to your portfolio over 25 years at 7% return.
