How Safe Withdrawal Rates Work

The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw each year without running out of money. The famous 4% rule from the Trinity Study applies to a standard 30-year retirement with a 50-75% stock allocation.

For early retirees, the 4% rule may be too aggressive. A 40-year retirement calls for ~3.5%, a 50-year retirement ~3.25%, and a 60-year retirement ~3.0%. This calculator adjusts for both retirement length and your stock/bond allocation.

Your stock allocation matters: too little in stocks and inflation erodes your wealth; too much and market volatility (sequence of returns risk) can permanently damage your portfolio in the early years of retirement. The historical sweet spot is 60-80% stocks.
